Agia Fotia

The village is small and offers you two taverns where you can enjoy delicious local dishes during lunch or dinner time. Our minimarket on the ground floor of our appartment building offers you enough to make a nice breakfast and all kind of stuff for a nice day at the beach.

The road along the coast line guides you through several small villages and all along the way you will find beautiful pristine beaches, some of them secretly hidden away. The hospitable Cretan people, many of them working in the agricultural sector and tourism, always welcome you smiling with their arms wide open. As soon as you leave the main road you will experience the real Cretan way of life.

The history of Crete goes back to over 4700 years and starts with the Minoan civilization. Places to visit are of course Knossos for its Minoan Palace but also Phaistos and Gournia are worthwhile a visit.

Greece is well known for its number of monasteries and so is Crete of course. All of them have something special. You will find Moni Toplou-which means “Monastery with the gun”- on your way from Sitia to Vaï, the famous beach with hundreds and hundreds of palm trees. Nowadays a museum of Byzantine Icons is situated in this monastery.

Makrigialos is a village a few kilometres further east from Agia Fotia, it offers a small harbour with taverns and tourist shops. You will find the Perovilakia gorge for an exciting hike 7 km further down the road and just above the entrance of the gorge you will see Moni Kapsa. First settlers came in the 15th century.

It is quite an easy trip to Ierapetra to do some shopping, having a coffee or frappe in the centre of this friendly town. You might even find the best bakery of Ierapetra! Tickets for a boat trip to the isle of Crisi are being sold at many locations in this town. Further west you will find Mirtos with its small esplanade and many taverns. When you follow the road to the west you will reach Tertsa, here the atmosphere gives you the impression that time stood still for a long time.

During your stay we can give all kinds of information about daytrips and interesting places to visit.
